Iranian Speaker Congratulates Muslim Counterparts on Eid al-Fitr
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – In separate congratulatory messages to his counterparts in Islamic countries on Eid al-Fitr, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani expressed the hope that the Muslim world would get rid of division and rifts.
In his letter on Tuesday, Larijani hoped that the religious festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, would steer the Islamic Ummah (community) to a bright future and put an end to division and disagreement within the Muslim world.
Eid al-Fitr, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks the most special of all occasions.
To partake in the blessings of Ramadan, able-bodied women and men, also girls and boys who have reached the age of religious observance, are required to fast for the duration of this month.
Abstaining from food and drink, and from other bodily pleasures, is a crucial element of the observation.
Ramadan is more than abstinence from food and drink during the hours of daylight. It is a time for contemplation, devotion and remembrance of God, especially through the reading or recitation of the Quran.
Tending to the welfare of the less fortunate members of the community, giving to the poor -especially at the end of the month- is also important.
On the day of Eid al-Fitr, Muslims attend prayers in congregation, listen to sermons and give Zakat al-Fitr or donations to the poor.
