Any Solution to Syria Crisis Must Be Acceptable to Syrian Nation: Iranian Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister insisted that a final solution to the prolonged crisis in Syria needs to receive approval from the Syrian government, nation and political groups.

In a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Tehran on Sunday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari said Tehran maintains that a political solution will be the sole way out of crisis that has plagued Syria for more than five years.

The primary approach that will guarantee the efficiency of political settlement of the crisis is taking account of the realities on the ground, the Iranian diplomat added.

He also deplored certain actors in Syria’s developments for insistence on military approaches toward the crisis.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in Syria and the upcoming peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland.

Heading a delegation, de Mistura arrived in Tehran on Sunday to exchange views with ranking Iranian officials ahead of the resumption of the Syria peace talks.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.

According to the UN, over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has also displaced over half of the Arab country’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
