TEHRAN (Tasnim) – At least 40 Taliban militants were killed and 45 were wounded as a result of an airstrike in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, officials said Tuesday.

The airstrike took place in Marja district of the province on Monday night after the Afghan Air Force targeted the insurgents, a statement by Helmand’s governor said.

Fourteen vehicles belonging to the militants were also destroyed, the statement added, Sputnik reported.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency, with other extremist groups such as Daesh (ISIL), expanding their activities in the country as well.
