Afghanistan’s Northern City Falls to Taliban, MP Says

KABUL (Tasnim) – A senior member of Afghanistan’s parliament said Taliban militants have taken the control of the northern city of Sayyad in Sar-e-Pul Province.

According to Tasnim dispatches, MP Muhammad Hassan Sharifi Balkhabi said Sayyad has fallen into the hands of Taliban militants and warned that since the district is mountainous, recapturing the areas would be difficult for the central government.

The lawmaker also called on the Kabul government to take a serious measure to end insecurity in Sar-e-Pul Province.

Over the past months, various districts in the province have been attacked by Taliban militants.

Afghan government forces have launched operations against the Taliban in 18 provinces of Afghanistan as fighting has intensified since the start of the militants' spring offensive in April.

In September, several districts in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktia also fell into the hands of the Taliban.
