Iran Summons UN Coordinator over ‘Meddlesome’ Remarks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry called in Gary Lewis, the UN resident coordinator in Iran, to protest his recent “meddlesome and unconventional” remarks against the Islamic Republic.
On Monday, the director general for international environment and sustainable development affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Lewis, reminding him about the UN offices’ obligations in the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian official told Lewis, who is also the resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), that the offices of international organizations in Tehran, including the UN and the UNDP, must only work within their sphere of duties and expertise.
The UN official, for his part, gave assurances that international missions in Iran have only focused on their specialized and development activities and act in full coordination with respective Iranian organizations.
