Iran’s President Vows Severe Response to JCPOA Violation
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian political leaders and decision-making bodies are consistent in their approach to responding to any violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran’s president said, warning that any such breach will draw a strong reaction from Tehran.
There is unanimity in Iran when it comes to reaction to the US violation of the JCPOA, with no difference in the views of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, the administration and the parliament on the issue, President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday, during a speech at the University of Tehran to mark the Student’s Day.
He stressed that implementation of Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), a US congressional bill extending sanctions against Iran for ten more years, will constitute a “clear and flagrant violation of the JCPOA” and draw a “very harsh reaction” from Tehran.
President Rouhani then reiterated that even US President Barack Obama’s endorsement of the bill will be tantamount to reneging on the nuclear deal, giving an assurance that it will provoke Iran’s proportional reaction.
The US Senate on Thursday voted 99-0 to extend the ISA for another decade. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected Obama would sign it.
Iran maintains that the measure will be a flagrant violation of the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
