President Rouhani Pledges Iran’s Continued Supports for Iraq, Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated the country’s unwavering support for the oppressed nations of the Middle East region, including Iraq and Syria, saying that the Islamic Republic spares no effort to that end.

Speaking in a meeting with Leader of Iraq's National Alliance Ammar al-Hakim in Tehran on Tuesday, President Rouhani hailed recent political and military achievements of the Iraqi nation in thwarting foreign plots and fighting terrorism as “invaluable”.

“In this campaign, the Iranian nation and government will side with the oppressed nations of the region, including Iraq and Syria,” he said, adding that Tehran will spare no efforts in this path.

He further warned that terrorism and division among regional nations are the two main plots of the enemies and stressed the need for Muslims to remain vigilant against the conspiracies and preserve their unity.

Hakim, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Republic for its supports for the Iraqi nation and said, “Given the willingness of the two nations, we are seeking a relationship between Iran and Iraq that is exemplary in the region.”

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran is known as the first country to help the Arab country and has always voiced support for Iraq’s solidarity and prosperity.
