Syria Army Repulses Major Daesh Offensive in Palmyra
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and their allies repelled a major attack by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists in the ancient city of Palmyra, central province of Homs, killing and injuring scores of militants.
Syrian forces claimed the lives of a large group of Daesh terrorists in Palmyra on Sunday after they attempted to sneak into Bir al-Fawaraa area, southwest of the ancient city, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.
Three armored vehicles and a number of vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns were destroyed in the process of the clashes, a military source said.
Separately, the army troops clashed with the Takfiri group in Tuloul al-Faras area, northeast of al-Qaryatain town in the southeastern countryside of Homs, killing large groups of them in the area.
Earlier, the terrorist group launched a massive offensive against Palmyra and managed to seize partial control of oil and gas fields to the city’s northwest.
In response, the Syrian army deployed reinforcements to the ancient city to prevent the Takfiri Daesh terrorists from further advancing toward the city.
Daesh overran the town in May last year, and systematically destroyed temples and tower tombs at the town’s UNESCO World Heritage site, before being pushed out by government forces and their allies.
