Thai King's Office Seeks Changes to Draft Constitution: PM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn's office has requested changes to a draft constitution regarding royal powers, the prime minister said Tuesday.

"The request said there are three to four issues that need fixing to ensure his royal powers," Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha Prayuth told reporters, Reuters reported.

Prayuth did not give details but said the changes would be made.

The draft constitution was passed in a referendum in August last year.

It paves the way for a return to civilian rule, including a general election that the military government has promised for this year.

The new monarch, who received the title “His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun,” assumed his new position on December 1, nearly two months after the old monarch’s demise.

The new king is known as Rama X, the tenth king in the Chakri dynasty.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy where the king plays a mainly ceremonial rule which was vested to the former prime minister, Prem Tinsulanonda, who had been one of his father’s closest advisers.

The country is currently being led by the junta through Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.

The official coronation of Vajiralongkorn will take place after the official cremation ceremony of King Bhumibol.

The late king’s remains are to be cremated in an elaborate ceremony that may take place in a year or more.
