Iranian Navy’s War Games Meant for Deterrence: Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of Iran’s First Naval Zone Admiral Amir Hossein Azad reiterated the country’s deterrent-based defense doctrine and said the Navy’s war games and its warships, planes, and missiles are meant only for deterrence.

As the commander-in-chief of the country’s Armed Forces has said, the Iranian nation is a peace-loving nation and will never wage a war against any country, Admiral Azad said on Monday.

“Our war games, our warships, our planes, and missiles are meant to guarantee defensive measures based on deterrence,” added the commander, who is also the spokesman for the Navy’s ongoing large-scale war game codenamed “Velayat 95".

Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense.

The Islamic Republic maintains that its defense power is driven by deterrence and poses no threat to any other country.

The last phase of the Velayat 95 war game began on Sunday in a vast maritime zone.

The drills cover an area of 2 million square kilometers, stretching from the Strait of Hormuz and Oman Sea to the north of the Indian Ocean and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

A range of naval equipment is utilized in the drills, including homegrown submarines and helicopters. The previous phases of the war game were held in 2016.

In addition, Iranian Navy commando units are carrying out special operations in the Makran region located in the southeast of the country, along the coasts of the Gulf of Oman.
