Iran’s FM, Turkmen President Discuss Closer Economic, Security Cooperation


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow held talks on expansion of relations between the two Muslim neighbors in diverse fields.

In a meeting in Ashgabat on Monday, the Iranian minister and Turkmenistan’s president discussed bilateral, regional and international issues.

Highlighting the two countries’ respect for the principles of good neighborliness, their political and cultural commonalities, and their close ties over the past 25 years, the two officials stressed the need for enhancement of bilateral relations on the basis of national interests.

They also explored avenues for stronger cooperation between Tehran and Ashgabat in transportation, rail, air, and land transit, energy industry and gas swap, security issues, and cultural affairs.

Heading a business delegation, Zarif is in Turkmenistan on the first leg of a tour of regional countries that will also take him to Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.
