Iran Has Reached All JCPOA Objectives, Vice-President Says
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, who is running for president, defended the current administration’s performance in reaching the 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and said the country has reached all its intended objectives in the deal, known as the JCPOA.
In a televised program on Tuesday night, Jahangiri hailed the country’s political and economic situation after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and said, “Today, the (country’s) economic growth has surged and the international atmosphere has become positive for us.”
“Some did not believe that the JCPOA, reached in negotiations with the Westerners, would yield results,” he said.
“…We have reached all the intended goals of the JCPOA and we have banished major risks from the country,” the presidential hopeful added.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the nuclear deal in July 2015.
When it came into force in January 2016, the JCPOA terminated all nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions.
Jahangiri, like other members of President Hassan Rouhani’s administration, defends the nuclear agreement and considers it as one of the major achievements of the administration.
According to some analysts, Jahangiri as a Reformist is expected to withdraw from the race in favor of President Rouhani, who is seeking a second term.
Two major political camps are at the heart of Iran’s politics, which are known as Reformists and Principlists. All other possible candidates not affiliated with any one of these two camps are considered as independent.
The 12th presidential election in Iran will be held on May 19.
The previous presidential vote in June 2013 saw Rouhani emerging victorious by garnering 50.7 percent of a total of over 36 million votes.
Nearly 50.5 million Iranians were eligible to vote in the 11th presidential election, while the voter turnout in the polls stood at 72.7 percent.
