Syria Army Repels Daesh Attack on Military Post in Deir Ez-Zor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies foiled a major offensive by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, forcing them to retreat.

On Sunday, Syrian forces inflicted major losses on Daesh militants after they attempted to sneak into in Tal Barouk area in Deir ez-Zor and target a military post there, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

The army destroyed their vehicles and claimed the lives of scores of them. Many of them fled the area following the counterattack and returned to their hideouts.

Later, the Syrian troops targeted the positions of the terrorists in al-Mahroukat hill, al-Sanouf hill and al-Taem in Deir ez-Zor where the Takfiri militants suffered serious setbacks.

Over the past six years, Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.
