“It was an important win for us and I would like to thank my players. We have three trophies ahead in the new season and we want to win all of them,” Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic said.
The Iranian Super Cup is an Iranian association football trophy awarded to the winner of a match between the Persian Gulf Professional League's season champion and the winner of the Hazfi Cup. It is similar to numerous other Super Cup tournaments held in other countries.
The match was held in 2005 when Hazfi Cup champion Saba Battery defeated league champion Foolad 4–0.
Zob Ahan won the second Super Cup, beating 2015–16 Persian Gulf Professional League winner Esteghlal Khuzestan 4–2 after extra time.
