Shiite-Sunni Unity Can Foil Plots against Afghanistan: Iranian Cleric
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi underlined that unity between Shiites and Sunnis can thwart plots hatched by the enemies of Islam against Muslim nations, including the Afghan people.
Speaking at a meeting with Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan Mohammad Mohaqiq in Tehran on Monday, Hashemi Shahroudi warned against US moves to infiltrate into Muslim countries, including Afghanistan and Iraq and called for remaining vigilant against Washington’s plots to sow discord among the people of these countries.
He further underlined the importance of unity between Shiites and Sunnis in Afghanistan and said it can foil the plots against the Muslim people of the country.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian cleric pointed to economic ties between Tehran and Kabul and stressed the need to boost trade cooperation between Iranian and Afghan merchants.
Mohaqiq, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Iranian people and government for their continued support for the Afghan nation.
Iranian officials have always voiced support for Afghanistan’s war against terrorism and extremism.
In 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Iran regards peace and security in Afghanistan as its own.
In June 2017, Iran and Afghanistan held the first round of talks on a "comprehensive strategic partnership" document as part of efforts to boost bilateral relations.
