Syrian Gov’t to Attend UN Talks in Vienna: UN Deputy Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian government will attend UN-sponsored peace talks set to take place in Vienna next week, the United Nations deputy Syria envoy said on Thursday.

At a press conference in Damascus, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy said Syria’s deputy foreign minister, Faisal Mekdad, had informed him of the government’s plans to attend the UN talks in the Austrian capital.

The United Nations has invited the Syrian government and opposition to a special meeting next week in Vienna, according to Reuters.

The upcoming round of the UN talks would take place in parallel with the Syria peace negotiations in the Kazakh city of Astana, initiated by Iran, Russia, and Turkey.

On November 22, the presidents of the three countries held talks on the Arab country’s crisis in Russia’s Sochi, coming up with a plan for a national congress for peace in Syria.

The congress is expected to be held in Sochi on January 29 and 30.
