Trump, May Discuss JCPOA over Phone

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US President Donald Trump spoke with Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May on Saturday on issues including the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, a week before Trump is to decide whether Washington will leave the pact, the White House said.

In the call with May, Trump “underscored his commitment to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon,” the White House said, according to Reuters.

Trump faces a May 12 deadline to decide whether to pull the United States out of the 2015 agreement, which offered Tehran relief from sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Since the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in Vienna in July 2015, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed Iran’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.

In a video message released on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated that Tehran will by no means agree to renegotiate the JCPOA or add any new terms to it, warning that Iran will choose how to respond to a US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is traveling to Washington on Sunday for a two-day visit, when he will meet Vice President Mike Pence and national security adviser John Bolton, for talks on Iran, North Korea, Syria and other issues, London said.

Trump is slated to visit Britain in July.
