Iranian Destroyer Equipped with Homegrown Point-Defense System

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Navy has equipped its ‘Sahand’ destroyer with a locally-manufactured point-defense weapon system dubbed ‘Kamand’, the Navy commander said.

Speaking to Tasnim, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said the Kamand point-defense system has been mounted on the Sahand destroyer.

The Kamand close-in weapon system can destroy any target approaching the destroyer from a distance of two kilometers by firing between 4,000 and 7,000 rounds per minute.

The commander said the homegrown vessel has also been furnished with anti-ship cruise missiles and a helicopter deck.

Sahand also enjoys electronic warfare systems and artillery equipment for warding off cruise missiles, Rear Admiral Khanzadi added.

Sahand destroyer and Fateh submarine are going to join the Navy’s fleet in coming days.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

In recent years, Iran’s naval forces have increased their presence in international waters to secure naval routes and protect merchant vessels and oil tankers against pirates.
