Iran Laments Georgia’s Deportation of Nationals

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi bemoaned a recent move by the Georgian government to deport some Iranian nationals, saying Tehran will keep talks with Tbilisi so that the issue is clarified.

Speaking to reporters at his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday, Qassemi said some 200 Iranian nationals have been deported from land and air borders of Georgia by Sunday for various reasons.

He emphasized that although some of the deported Iranians had sufficient and credible documents, they were not allowed to enter Georgia.

“The reason for this (move) is not clear to us. We object to this and will continue discussions with the Georgian side to clarify the issue…,” the spokesman went on to say.

The Iranian embassy in Georgia has confirmed reports on December 2 about the deportation or entry ban of dozens of Iranian citizens from the Caucasus country, media reports said on Monday.

The Iranian embassy in Tbilisi says that it is pursuing the issue with Georgian authorities and asking for clarification of immigration laws and regulations and satisfactory explanation for the deportations.
