Envoy: Iran Prioritized for Reconstruction Projects in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud said his country gives priority to Iran for carrying out projects in the reconstruction process of Syria after years of war.

Speaking at a gathering of Iranian and Syrian business people in Tehran on Sunday, Mahmoud said there are good investment opportunities available in Syria.

He said Damascus has given priority to the Iranian government and economic activists to carry out business projects in the Arab country and get involved in reconstruction projects and economic cooperation.

Mahmoud added that the Syrian government would facilitate the activity of Iranian companies in the production and agriculture sector.

Earlier this month, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Amir Amini dismissed speculation about the Iranian administration’s engagement in construction plans in Syria, saying Iran’s private sector is scheduled to undertake such projects.

Iran wants to use the capabilities of its private sector in Syria’s market, he said, adding that private companies would get involved in both undertaking projects in Syria and supplying the Arab country with building materials.

In September 2017, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that Iran would assist the Syrian nation in reconstructing their country after the war, in the same way that it contributed to the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Arab state amid the crisis.
