Zarif: New Sanctions Prove US Economic Terrorism against Iranians

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif denounced the US president’s new plan for a substantial increase of sanctions on the “country of Iran” as a testimony to the US’ deliberate economic terrorism against ordinary citizens.

In a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday, Zarif took a swipe at US President Donald Trump for escalating an “economic WAR on Iranians” and for ordering his secretary of treasury to “substantially increase sanctions against the COUNTRY of Iran."

“It’s admission that US is DELIBERATELY targeting ordinary citizens: #EconomicTerrorism, illegal & inhuman,” he deplored.

“Stop war & terror,” he added.

His reaction came a few hours after Trump said he had ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “substantially” increase economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

“I have just instructed the Secretary of the Treasury to substantially increase Sanctions on the country of Iran!” Trump tweeted, without providing more details.

Earlier this month, Trump’s administration imposed sanctions on a shipping network that Iran uses to sell oil, and unveiled a $15 million reward to anyone with information that disrupts Iranian oil sales.

In comments in May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for stronger internal unity and mutual trust for fighting the economic war that the US has waged against the Islamic Republic, stressing that Washington could never bring Iran to its knees.

The president also stressed that the US government will abandon its hostile policies against Iran when it realizes that the sanctions have a small impact.
