Iran’s President Rouhani Hopes for Closer Ties with Oman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Haitham bin Tariq on assuming the throne as the new sultan of Oman, hoping for the development of ties between Tehran and Muscat.
In a message on Monday, Rouhani congratulated Haitham bin Tariq Al Said on becoming the new sultan of Oman.
The Iranian president said the relations between Tehran and Muscat under Oman's late ruler Sultan Qaboos Al Said were based upon “mutual trust”, adding, “I hope that the bilateral relations during the era of your leadership would further grow in all fields with wisdom and discernment.”
Rouhani also wished health and success for the new sultan and prosperity for the “brotherly” nation of Oman.
The new Omani sultan, Haitham bin Tariq, was named by Qaboos in a letter opened following his death.
Sultan Qaboos, who died on Friday, had come to power in 1970 in a palace coup against his father.
The late monarch was lauded for the mediating role he played between conflicting parties in the Persian Gulf region during his near-50 year rule, which also saw the emergence of an educated middle class in the country.
In his inaugural address, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq pledged to stay the course on the country's foreign policy and continue to “assist in resolving disputes peacefully”.
