EAEU to Hold Int’l Conference in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will hold an international conference in Iran’s northern port city of Bandar Anzali in October, an Iranian official said.

The international conference of the Eurasian Economic Union on the geopolitical role of the free trade zones in the promotion of regional relations will be held in Iran’s Bandar Anzali on October 14 and 15, spokesperson for Anzali Free Trade Zone, Mahdi Kazemian said.

The conference will be held under the auspices of the secretariat of the Free Trade Zones Supreme Council, the Iranian Association of Geopolitics, the Institute for Islamic World Futures Studies (IIWFS), the University of Tehran, and a number of other Iranian academic and research centers, he added.

Kazemian also noted that the conference will discuss three main topics, including the geopolitical and geo-economic role of the free trade zones.

In May 2018, Iran signed an agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union members -Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia- in Kazakhstan.

Once the free trade zone comes into force, the EAEU will grant Iran tariff concessions on hundreds of items.

Russia’s State Duma and the Federation Council ratified the agreement to establish Iran-EAEU free trade zone in November 2018.

The Eurasian Economic Union and Iran started to develop the agreement on the free trade in 2015, though the signing was postponed several times.
