Iranian, Qatari Diplomats Hold Talks on Afghanistan Developments

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Qatar’s special envoys for Afghanistan held a meeting in Doha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran said.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Seyed Abbas Mousavi confirmed on Tuesday that Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian, Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, has held talks with the political deputy of the Taliban in Qatar, noting that the envoy has held a meeting with the Qatari government’s special envoy for Afghanistan as well.

“Such meetings are held as part of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s efforts and consultations to hold intra-Afghan dialogue with the purpose of establishing peace, stability and security in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” Mousavi added.

On Monday, Taherian travelled to Qatar for talks with the leaders of the Taliban’s political office about foreign interference in Afghanistan and other issues going on in Iran’s eastern neighbor.

In a statement in May, Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed readiness to help boost negotiations between the Afghan parties over political issues, saying Tehran is ready to assist Kabul in the process of intra-Afghan political talks and continued alliance of Afghan groups, including the Taliban.
