Iraqi Police Detain 3 Daesh Militants in Nineveh

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The police chief of Iraq’s Nineveh governorate, Brigadier General Laith Khalil al-Hamdani, announced that three Daesh terrorists were arrested on Tuesday.

“The Directorate of Control Affairs of Nineveh Police Command managed to arrest three members of Daesh terrorist gangs, and they were fighters in Diwan al-Jund who worked in the ‘public camps’ during the period of Daesh's control over the city of Mosul,” Al-Hamdani said in a statement, Shafaq News Agency reported.

He explained, "The arrest operation took place in Al-Nasr control on Mosul-Baghdad highway, south of Mosul, based on accurate intelligence information".

In recent months, suspected Daesh militants have stepped up attacks, particularly in the area between Kirkuk, Salahuddin (north), and Diyala (east), known as the “Triangle of Death”.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh by reclaiming all of its territory – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the terrorist group in 2014.

However, the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in some areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks.

The Iraqi army and popular forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the terror group in these parts of the country.
