US Sanctions on Iran Crime against Humanity: Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations denounced the unilateral American sanctions against Tehran as a crime against humanity.

Addressing a UN Security Council session, Majid Takht Ravanchi said the sanctions and other unilateral actions of the US against the other nations, including Iran, amount to crime against humanity.

The Iranian envoy also called on the international community to take immediate action to address the problem of US sanctions, which he said disrupt access to financial systems, foreign reserves, and even foodstuff and medicine.

Although certain Western countries claim that medicine, food and other humanitarian supplies are exempted from the so-called smart sanctions, they are mostly damaging the innocent people and vulnerable classes of the society, IRNA quoted him as saying.

The imposition of sanctions is even more dangerous as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Takht Ravanchi noted, saying if one country is not safe, other states will not be safe either.

The ambassador finally lashed out at the US sanctions for impeding Iran’s efforts to properly tackle the pandemic.
