Iran Open to Closer Parliamentary Ties with Serbia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf called for the expansion of parliamentary cooperation with Serbia.

In a meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic, held in Tehran on Sunday, Qalibaf expressed the Iranian Parliament’s readiness to broaden relations with Serbia.

He also highlighted the major role that the parliamentary friendship groups and expert commissions can play in the enhancement of relations between the two nations.

“Both countries have made efforts to protect their independence and struggle with unilateralism,” Qalibaf said, adding that Iran and Serbia both have the experience of standing against the US pressures in the political and economic fields.

The senior Serbian diplomat, for his part, hailed Iran as a major country with successful efforts to protect its independence and freedom, and praised the Islamic Republic for supporting Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Selakovic also voiced Serbia’s readiness to boost economic, political and parliamentary ties with Iran.
