Iran Reaffirms Support for Intra-Afghan Peace Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian foreign minister expressed Tehran’s support for the peace negotiations among Afghan groups and the efforts to protect the achievements of people of Afghanistan.
Mohammad Javad Zarif and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Afghanistan and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Jean Arnault held a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday to talk about the latest developments in Afghanistan.
Elaborating on Iran’s views about peace and security in Afghanistan and the process of peace under the control of Afghan people, Zarif reaffirmed Iran’s support for the intra-Afghan negotiations and for the protection of what the Afghan nation has achieved in recent years, particularly the basic rights of people.
For his part, Arnault highlighted the role of Afghanistan’s neighbors, saying he has started his first regional visit after taking the office from Iran.
The UN special representative also emphasized that the settlement of problems in Afghanistan requires collective action, noting that his efforts are focused on finding a way for such collective cooperation.
In an address to the 9th annual ministerial meeting of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul initiative in Tajikistan in March, Zarif had invited the UN to help facilitate the intra-Afghan negotiations, which he described as a requisite for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
He also emphasized that any peace agreement in Afghanistan should guarantee the right of self-determination for the Afghan people.
