Daily COVID-19 Cases in Iran Continue to Rise

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – COVID-19 infections in Iran continue to rise, with 14,285 new cases reported over the past 24 hours.

The Iranian Health Ministry reported 30 new COVID-related deaths on Thursday, putting the total death toll at 132,333.

More than 830 persons have been admitted to the hospital as a result of new cases discovered in the last 24 hours.

The ministry said that some 6,091,880 persons have recovered or been discharged from hospitals out of a total of 6,293,695 affected people.

It put the number of patients in critical conditions at 1,294.

The Health Ministry also said that 60,601,957 Iranians have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 53,873,978 have received the second dosage.

In addition, 15,936,852 people have received the third shot, which serves as a booster.

The World Health Organization said there were 21 million new coronavirus cases reported globally last week, the highest weekly number of COVID-19 cases recorded since the pandemic began. The number of deaths was largely unchanged, at more than 50,000.

The WHO said the biggest increase in cases was seen in the Middle East, with a 39% rise, followed by a 36% jump in Southeast Asia. Deaths increased in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, but fell in other regions.

Scientists say there were indications the massive spike caused by omicron had started to level off but that infection rates remained high. They say omicron is far less likely to cause serious disease and hospitalization but spreads much faster than previous COVID-19 variants, including delta.
