Iran Welcomes Truce in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran welcomes the ceasefire in Yemen, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said, hoping for the launch of Yemeni negotiations with an end to the war and the removal of the siege on the Arab country.

In a telephone conversation with his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk on Tuesday, Amirabdollahian congratulated him on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and also on his appointment as the African country’s top diplomat.

Amirabdollahian also underlined Iran’s determination to expand bilateral relations with Mauritania.

The top Iranian diplomat noted that boosting ties and cooperation with Africa is a top priority on the agenda of the foreign policy of Iran’s government, saying the ties with the countries of West and North Africa are pursued in line with the same policy.

Amirabdollahian further referred to the problems facing the Muslim world, saying Iran welcomes the truce in Yemen and hopes that while focusing on the removal of the humanitarian blockade on the country and with the ceasefire holding, “we will witness talks between Yemeni factions,” the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister thanked Mauritania for its principled stance in support of the oppressed people of Palestine. He said, “Unfortunately, we witnessed the desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque by the Zionists during the holy month of Ramadan and we hope that the Palestinian people will achieve their historical rights with the support of Muslim countries and nations.”

For his part, Marzouk congratulated his Iranian counterpart on the holy month of Ramadan.

He also described relations between the two countries as strong and sincere, adding that given the existing possibilities, Mauritania welcomes cooperation with Iran in the development of its infrastructure and bilateral interests.

On the issue of Palestine, the Mauritanian foreign minister underlined the principled positions of the two countries to support the oppressed Palestinian people.

He also expressed hope that a proper solution would be found to the Yemen crisis.

Marzouk further hoped that with the continuation of consultations and efforts by both sides, Iran and Mauritania would witness the expansion of bilateral relations more than ever.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Mauritania also underscored the need to continue consultations and exchanging views over the trend of bilateral ties and also the issues of the Muslim world. They then invited each other to visit their respective countries.
