Iran Skeptical of Good Result in NPT Review Conference

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran is not expecting the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York to yield any favorable result, the spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Behrouz Kamalvandi said the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran does not expect the month-long review conference of the NPT to have a desirable outcome.

He also noted that the conference, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, is not predicted to result in the restoration of any rights.

The month-long Tenth Review Conference of the NPT began at the UN Headquarters on August 1.

In comments on the second day of the conference on Tuesday, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi claimed that in order for the IAEA to be able to give the necessary assurances that nuclear activity in Iran is for peaceful use, the Agency must be given “access that is commensurate with the breadth and depth of that nuclear program”.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami reiterated that all of Iran’s nuclear activities conform with the Safeguards Agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
