Deal in JCPOA Talks Still at Hand with US’ Resolve: Iranian FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amirabdollahian said an eventual agreement in the Vienna talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal is still achievable if the US shows the necessary determination.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Amirabdollahian and his Norwegian counterpart Anniken Huitfeldt talked about the latest developments in the relations between Tehran and Oslo as well as the regional and international developments.

Expressing his readiness to increase contacts and set out a clear path for deepening and expanding cooperation with Norway, Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian stressed the need to use the existing and diverse capacities of both countries.

On the sanctions removal talks, the foreign minister clarified Iran’s positions and said if the United States has the required will, an agreement will be still available.

“The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should act based on its duties and technical responsibilities and distance itself from the political and dual approach regarding the peaceful nuclear program (of Iran),” he added, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

For her part, the foreign minister of Norway stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, and highlighted the issues raised in bilateral relations.

Huitfeldt also highlighted her country’s interest in a faster solution to the JCPOA and expansion of cooperation with Iran.

The Vienna discussions between Iran and the other parties to the Iran deal began in April on the assumption that the US, under the administration of Joe Biden, would be willing to rejoin the JCPOA.

Former US President Donald Trump abandoned the JCPOA in May 2018 in pursuit of illegal "maximum pressure" sanctions against Iran.
