One Dead, 12 Missing after Huge Explosion Rocks Jersey


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – At least one person has been killed and around a dozen are missing after an explosion at a block of flats in Jersey.

One person has been confirmed dead, two injured and "up to a dozen" are missing following a gas explosion at Haut du Mont flats in St Helier, Jersey, States of Jersey Police chief officer Robin Smith has said, The Express reported.

Jersey Police say the search will take "a number of days" due to the devastation caused by the explosion near a property just before 4 am.

The explosion was reportedly heard across the island, as a large plume of dark smoke rose from the area of Mount Bingham.

Eyewitnesses say windows at properties around the fire were shattered by the explosion.

Local police have urged residents to stay clear from the area surrounding Mount Bingham.

Firefighters are continuing to respond to the incident at residential properties on Pier Road, St Helier.

According to local media, emergency services are working on the scene to contain the explosion. Debris is strewn around the area, including commercial buildings, with Jersey Police diverting traffic.

Islanders reportedly heard a loud bang in the early hours of the morning just before 4 am today.

Chief officer Robin Smith said Jersey Fire and Rescue Service were liaising with Hampshire Fire and Rescue to help with the search.

He added that some 30 people evacuated from the area had been taken to St Helier Town Hall.
