Iran-Saudi Détente Sounds Death Knell of US’ Regional Hegemony: General

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A high-ranking Iranian general hailed the Chinese-mediated agreement on rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia as a political earthquake that marks an end to the American hegemony and ushers in the “post-US era” in the Persian Gulf region.

The agreement that Iran and Saudi Arabia struck in China on Friday to bury the hatchet and resume diplomatic ties after seven years will serve the interests of the two nations and the entire West Asia region and is not against any regional state, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, the top military adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, said on Sunday.

It is natural for the arrogant powers to be perturbed about reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and throw a wrench in the process, he stated.

The Iranian general also described the détente as an earthquake in the political sphere and an end to the American hegemony that has ushered in the post-US era in the Persian Gulf region.

“The era of decline of the power of the US and Zionists has begun. Our view on the neighbors and orientation to the East will increase the geopolitical weight of Iran and mark the transition of the condition of people from the status quo,” he said.

The general also stressed the need for Iran to seize the opportunity provided by the tensions that the US and Europe have been involved regarding the developments in Ukraine and the tensions surrounding Taiwan, and to adopt a definite strategy according to the mutual interests with China and Russia considering the common threats posed by the US.

He went on to say that China has expanded its geoeconomic sphere from the China Sea to the Persian Gulf with a definite strategy. “It appears that China and Russia will help Saudi Arabia become a member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This alliance can play the role of a dam against NATO and Western military power in future.”
