Region Needs Iran, Egypt’s Potential: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reiterating Iran’s openness to normal relations with neighboring and regional countries, including Jordan and Libya, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted the significant role of the capacities of Iran and Egypt in the region.

Asked about the plans for the revival of relations between Iran and Egypt, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said at a press conference on Monday, “Egypt is an important country and the two states (Iran and Egypt) attach significance to each other. The region requires the positive potential of Tehran and Cairo.”

He said Iran and Egypt have held talks on the sidelines of the second Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership that was held in Jordan in December 2022.

On the restoration of relations between Iran and Jordan, Kanaani said Tehran and Amman have never halted political negotiations in the past years although they do not have political relations.

Hailing the good negotiations between Iranian and Jordanian officials on the sidelines of the Baghdad Conference in Amman, the spokesman added, “In general, we have political contacts. We, as Iran, are definitely ready for the promotion of relations on the basis of our principled approach.”

The spokesman also pointed to the good negotiations between Iran and Libya, saying Iran's accredited ambassador to Tripoli and Libya's foreign minister discussed a range of issues on Sunday, including the reopening of the embassies.

“We hope to see the resumption of activities of the embassies of the two countries,” he stated.

Following days of intensive talks in Beijing, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed on Friday to resume their diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and diplomatic missions within at most two months.

The Arab governments neighboring Iran have eagerly welcomed the rapprochement between the two regional heavyweights.
