Iranian Ambassador, Russian Deputy FM Discuss Meeting on Syria


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali met with Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to discuss the latest plans regarding the quadripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, and Russia, which focuses on the situation in Syria.

On April 4 and 5, 2023, the deputy foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, Syria, and Turkey held talks in Moscow. The participants in this meeting discussed the issues related to preparing for the upcoming meeting of the foreign ministers of the four countries. Each of the participating countries clearly and explicitly expressed their positions and viewpoints. The parties agreed to continue their negotiations, and according to an agreement between the four countries, this meeting is planned to be held in May.

The Iranian ambassador and Bogdanov, who is also the Special Representative of the Russian President for Middle East and Africa Affairs, emphasized the importance of this initiative in strengthening the stability and security of the region and continuing efforts to bring the different parties closer together.

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, announced on April 14, that the date and location of the quadripartite meeting of the foreign ministers with him are under negotiation. He also stressed that there should be no preconditions for this meeting. "It is necessary for the foreign ministers' meeting to be held. The groundwork for this is being laid, and our deputies discussed it at their meeting in the Russian capital," Lavrov stated after meeting with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara.

A few days ago, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in an interview with Al Jazeera English that "We welcome quadripartite talks at various levels to resolve misunderstandings and problems between Turkey and Syria."

He also emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations to resolve issues and establish peace in the region.
