Iran-Oman Interaction Benefits Regional Security: Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ruling out the presence of foreign military forces in the region, the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said cooperation between Tehran and Muscat will contribute to regional security.

In a meeting with Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said in Muscat on Tuesday, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said Iran’s basic policy is based on ensuring security in the region by the indigenous forces.

“The joint measures by Iran and Oman can create better security and prove that there is no need for the presence of outsiders in the region,” the general added.

Pointing to the multipolar order in the future of the world and the transition of power from the West to Asia, General Baqeri said these developments have affected the West Asia and highlight the need for closer military cooperation to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman and the northwestern parts of the Indian Ocean.

The Iranian commander then lauded Oman for adopting wise policies towards Yemen, stressing, “The efforts to create fair peace and protect Yemen’s territorial integrity need to go on.”

For his part, the sultan of Oman emphasized the necessity for the enhancement of military and defense cooperation with Iran.

He also pointed to the Omani Navy’s participation in joint international naval exercises with Iran, stressing that the security of the Hormuz Strait and the Sea of Oman could be provided by the regional countries alone.

Iran and Oman have held several joint naval drills in recent years.

In April 2019, high-ranking military officials from the two neighbors signed a memorandum of understanding to boost cooperation in various military spheres.
