Iran Supports Russia’s Sovereignty after Wagner Mutiny

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President Ebrahim Raisi has expressed Iran’s support for the national sovereignty of Russia in the wake of a recent failed mutiny by the Wagner mercenaries.

Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president's deputy chief of staff for political affairs, said in a tweet that Raisi has held separate telephone conversations with his Russian counterpart and with the Armenian prime minister on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has provided an explanation of the recent military revolt in his country, stressing that the event could not challenge Russia’s national sovereignty, Jamshidi said.

He noted that Raisi has reaffirmed Iran’s support for the national sovereignty of Russia.

The official also stated that Raisi has reviewed Iran’s relations with Russia and Armenia as well as the developments in the Caucasus in the talks with Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“Dr. Raisi has welcomed the peace negotiations, considering any geopolitical change in the region and the military presence of ultra-regional forces to be to the detriment of Caucasus security,” Jamshidi added.

In a statement on Monday, the Kremlin said the Russian and Iranian presidents have held a phone call, adding, "The president of Iran expressed his full support for the Russian leadership in view of the events of 24 June." It was referring to the Wagner rebellion.

It came after Russia's mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin staged an apparent insurrection, sending an armored convoy towards Moscow.

Russian media reports that Prigozhin remains under investigation by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) after leading the rebellion.
