Chinese Consulate in Marseille Complains to France Over Attack on Tourist Bus
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Chinese Consulate General in Marseille lodged a complaint with France after a bus carrying a Chinese tour group in the southern city had its windows smashed, causing minor injuries, as stated by China's Consular Affairs Office on Sunday.
Citing the official release from China's Consular Affairs Office, Reuters reported that the consulate's complaint urges France to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and their property.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the bus was targeted by protesters on Thursday during the recent wave of violence in French cities following the police shooting of a teenager of North African descent. The Consular Office statement confirmed that the Chinese tourists have already departed France.
In light of the ongoing protests across the country, the Consular office's statement advised Chinese citizens in France or planning to travel there to "strengthen prevention" and exercise increased vigilance and caution.
Meanwhile, various right- and left-wing politicians, social scientists, analysts, and commentators have weighed in on the violent protests that erupted in French cities after the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk, who was of an Arab descent.
Since 2020, there have been 21 fatal police shootings during traffic stops, with a majority of the victims being of black or Arab origin, according to the Guardian.
The failure of France's political leaders to address this issue is one of the reasons why many young people, particularly those of color, feel at odds with "the system." Far-right politicians like Éric Zemmour, who used divisive language referring to "civil war" and "insurrection," faced criticism for their inflammatory response. Even President Emmanuel Macron drew criticism for attending an Elton John concert while the unrest unfolded in Paris.
The challenges of poverty, marginalized suburban communities, unemployment, limited opportunities, and social alienation are issues faced by young people in many developed countries including France. When coupled with long-standing institutional racism in the justice system and other state structures, it is unsurprising that such explosive situations occur.
