Iran Stresses Regional Initiatives for Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran called for the advancement of regional initiatives under the auspices of the United Nations for the settlement of problems in Afghanistan, which he insisted requires an inclusive government.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday expressed Iran’s readiness to contribute to the regional initiatives for Afghanistan under the aegis of the UN.

He made the comments in a meeting with Feridun Sinirlioglu, who acts as the UN Secretary General’s Special Coordinator, Independent Assessment Mandated by Security Council Resolution 2679.

Calling for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism in that country, Amirabdollahian stressed the need to support the regional initiatives, especially the framework of neighbors, to help resolve the challenges faced by Afghans.

“Afghanistan needs urgent solutions, and if the international community does not pay serious attention to the security challenges resulting from the moves of terrorist groups in that country, its negative consequences will plague the region and the world,” the top Iranian diplomat warned.

For his part, Sinirlioglu reaffirmed the UN’s determination to support the regional initiatives for Afghanistan, back the framework of neighbors, and help establish an inclusive government in that country.
