Persian Gulf Security A Regional Issue: Iran’s FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Plans to ensure security in the Persian Gulf come within the purview of the regional countries alone, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told his Emirati counterpart.

In a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday night, Amirabdollahian said Iran attaches great significance to the security of the Persian Gulf region.

He underlined that the regional countries can ensure security across the region without any foreign interference.

Pointing to his “very good and constructive” negotiations with the Emirati officials during a visit to Abu Dhabi in June, the Iranian foreign minister called for the necessary arrangements to carry out the bilateral agreements.

He further condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark, urging an emergency ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in this regard.

Amirabdollahian also stressed the need for serious action against the perpetrators of the sacrilegious moves that have hurt the feelings of Muslims across the world.

For his part, the top Emirati diplomat denounced any insult to divine books, religions and beliefs in the strongest term, welcoming his Iranian counterpart’s proposal for an extraordinary meeting of the OIC.

Bin Zayed Al Nahyan further hailed the reciprocal visits by the Emirati and Iranian officials, called for the promotion of cooperation between the two neighbors in various fields, and emphasized that Abu Dhabi is pushing to settle the problems faced by Iranian expatriates.
