Protesters Surround French Military Base in Niger Over Intervention (+Video)


TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Thousands converged on French military base in Niger, decrying the European country's prolonged military involvement in the West African nation.

Protesters gathered near Niamey army base, voiced grievances on Friday, chanting, "Down with France, down with ECOWAS," alluding to Economic Community of West African States.

 

 

Demonstrators accused France of manipulation in the regional bloc and expressed dissatisfaction with ECOWAS.

The rally follows West African bloc's authorization for a "standby force to restore constitutional order" in Niger. French Foreign Ministry has affirmed support for West African leaders' decisions.

Some protestors brandished Russian and Niger flags, endorsing coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani. The general has declared himself leader after presidential guard's coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26. Bazoum is presently detained at Niamey residence.

Former colonial power France held sway in West Africa till 1960. France sustained trade ties and military presence in the area, maintaining 1,500 soldiers in Niger. American and European troops are also stationed in the nation.

Niger's coup leaders recently annulled defense pacts with France.

On July 30, France evacuated its citizens amid fervent protests outside the Niamey embassy.
