Iran's Top Diplomat, EU's Borrell Hold Talks in NY

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell held a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a post on his X account on Wednesday, the EU foreign policy chief said he has passed three main messages in the meeting with the Iranian foreign minister.

Borrell condemned what he has called “arbitrary detentions of EU nationals” in Iran and has called for their release.

He also stressed the need to “find diplomatic solution to nuclear issue through JCPOA”.

The EU diplomat noted that he has also called on Iran to “stop military cooperation with Russia” in the war in Ukraine, a claim that Tehran has repeatedly rejected.

Since April 2021, several rounds of talks between Iran and the five remaining parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) –the UK, France, Germany, China and Russia- have been held in Vienna to bring the US back into the Iran deal.

The talks, however, exclude American diplomats due to their country’s withdrawal from the deal.
