UN Must Be Preserved, Transformed for Global Balance, Says Russian Senator

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Maintaining global balance requires continued operation of the United Nations but either a UN reform is needed or else the powers of countries seeking membership of the UN Security Council should be expanded, a senior Russian senator told an international forum in Moscow.

"The world is extremely disbalanced now, with military conflicts erupting everywhere showing that the old system of coordinates and pillars the United Nations was based on no longer works. What can the UN do now? It can only exist, as its sole task is not to die right now. Otherwise (without the UN), there will be a chaotic system," said Alexey Pushkov, chairman of the Commission on Information Policy and Relations with the Mass Media of Russia’s Federation Council (upper house), TASS reported.

It is necessary "to preserve the UN in this new balance while trying to give it some new meaning, perhaps through reform or through expanding the powers of new large states that are seeking to join the UN Security Council as permanent members," the senator maintained.

Pushkov pushed for efforts to overcome the slew of Western sanctions and start working toward a new balance.

"A battle for the parameters of a new world order is on now. The Ukraine crisis is about it. And the Middle East crisis is about it as well. In fact, the next world order is currently being decided. And it is in Ukraine that it is being decided. This is why the US-led West is being so much focused on this issue," Pushkov opined.
