Iran’s Sea Trade Up 9% in 2023: PMO Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The chief executive of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) said the country’s sea trade in the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2023) registered a nine percent growth compared to a year earlier.

Speaking in a meeting with Armenia's Commercial Attaché to Iran Vardan Kostanyan, held at the venue of the PMO, Ali Akbar Safaei said that while many countries tried to change the geography of the region and disrupt the border shared between Iran and Armenia, the Islamic Republic of Iran stood by Armenia firmly and did not allow other countries to undermine the friendly ties between the two sides.

Iran attaches great importance to its relations with neighbors and this has been emphasized by the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi, the deputy roads minister stated.

The PMO welcomes bilateral agreements between Iran and Armenia in the maritime and port sector, Safaei said, adding that trilateral cooperation between Iran, India and Armenia in Chabahar Port is also supported by the organization and it will try to take effective measures in line with strengthening relations with the three countries.

Earlier, Iran had emphasized bolstering trilateral cooperation withIndia and Russia in a meeting attended by the adviser to the Russian president, chairman of Supreme Council of India’s National Security Council and Iran’s minister of roads and urban development.

Armenia's commercial attaché to Iran, for his part, stated that Armenia is the gateway of trading goods to the northern and European countries, adding that Iran is also the gateway of trading goods towards the Persian Gulf littoral states and India.

The two countries enjoy high potential to broaden their bilateral ties in the sector of maritime trade, Vardan Kostanyan emphasized.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is of paramount importance for Armenia from a strategic point of view and for this reason, the revival of the infrastructural installations and communication routes has been put on the agenda of the Armenian government, he said.
