Spokesman Hits Back at NATO Chief over Comments on Iran’s Regional Role

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Refuting the comments from the NATO secretary general who has accused Iran of destabilizing the region, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry pointed to the dark record of the Western military alliance in upsetting security across the world.

In a statement on Tuesday, Nasser Kanaani condemned the baseless accusation that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has made against Iran.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the US secretary of state in Washington, DC, Stoltenberg accused Iran of destabilizing the region, alleging that Iran bears the responsibility for backing attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

“The claims raised by the NATO secretary general resemble a bitter irony, because NATO and some of its members, with their dark record of colonialism, plotting and carrying out destructive and interfering policies, as well as military actions in West Asia and other places, are the root cause of instability and insecurity, not only in the region but the whole world,” Kanaani said.

Reaffirming Iran’s policy of strong relations with the neighbors on the basis of good neighborliness and mutual respect, the spokesman said Tehran’s foreign policy entails efforts to ensure stability, security and prosperity in the region and rejecting foreign interference.
