Air Force to Renovate Airport in SE Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Air Force undertook to renovate and bring into operation an international airport in Konarak, an economic and military coastal zone located in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan.

The Air Force and the Chabahar Free Trade Zone signed a cooperation agreement on the renovation of the international airport of Konarak.

In comments at the signing ceremony, Air Force Commander General Hamid Vahedi said the Air Force units will do their utmost and provide the necessary assistance to renovate and relaunch the airport with the capacities available in their airbases.

The coasts of Makran, also known as Pasabandar, are located in Iran's southeastern region, next to the Oman Sea.

The strategic area has attracted the attention of many Iranian decision-makers and military officials, particularly after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the need for development of the region.

In November 2014, in a meeting with high-ranking Navy commanders, Ayatollah Khamenei said, "The issue of development of the coasts of Makran is also among those basic tasks, and the plans for that region should be carried out more rapidly."

The Navy is now developing a naval base at the coastal area of Pasabandar.
