Israeli Assault on Nuseirat Refugee Camp in Gaza Leaves Twenty Palestinians Dead

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Israeli airstrikes targeting a residential building and a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp resulted in the deaths of twenty Palestinians, with many more feared trapped under the rubble amid ongoing rescue efforts hampered by fuel shortages and equipment limitations.

The Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip bore the brunt of Israeli aggression as fighter jets unleashed devastating attacks on both a school and a residential structure, initially claiming the lives of fourteen individuals, according to reports.

Rescuers struggle to reach the numerous casualties buried beneath the debris of the bombed residential building, hindered by fuel shortages and insufficient equipment, rendering the situation increasingly dire.

The harrowing aftermath of the assault underscores the plight of those caught in the crossfire, with newly displaced individuals from Rafah among the casualties, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the Israeli violence plaguing Gaza.

Efforts to extract survivors from the rubble persist, with civil defense crews and volunteers toiling tirelessly despite mounting challenges, yet progress remains agonizingly slow as fears mount over the fate of those still trapped beneath the wreckage.

Amidst the chaos, reports emerge of further Israeli aggression targeting the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City and eastern Rafah, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis gripping the besieged territory.

The Nuseirat refugee camp, established in the wake of the Nakba, bears witness to the enduring legacy of displacement and dispossession, serving as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by Palestinian refugees since 1948. More than 750,000 Palestinians were forcefully displaced, leading to the creation of Israel.

In recent months, the camp has been subjected to relentless Israeli assaults, with notable incidents including the destruction of the Grand Nuseirat Mosque and the tragic loss of thirty-six members of the Tabatibi family in a single airstrike.

Nuseirat refugee camp takes its name from a local Bedouin tribe and is located in the central Gaza Strip. Before Israel’s war on Gaza, it had been a densely populated camp, home to 85,409 Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA.

Despite repeated acts of aggression, Gaza's residents remain resilient as they face the harsh reality of daily life amidst the constant threat of Israeli violence and devastation. Since October 7, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 35,173 people and injured 79,061.
