Shooting at Wisconsin Rooftop Party Leaves 10 Injured
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A shooting at a rooftop party in Wisconsin early on Sunday left at least 10 people injured, including teenagers, police said.
Nine people were injured by gunfire and another was injured by broken glass at the party at a high-rise apartment in downtown Madison, The Guardian reported.
Sunday’s violence brought the number of mass shootings in the US so far this year to at least 205, according to the non-partisan Gun Violence Archive.
The archive defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are wounded or killed. The US’s persistently high number of mass shootings has fueled calls from some for more substantial gun control, though Congress has largely not heeded those pleas.
All of the injured in Madison were hospitalized. None had injuries considered to be life-threatening, according to authorities.
The victims ranged in age from 14 to 23.
“It is truly a miracle that no one is dead,” the Madison police chief, Shon Barnes, said at a news conference. “As a community, our hearts are hurting.”
Police were called to the apartment complex at about 12.45am.
“These students should have been celebrating summer vacation and not receiving medical treatment,” Barnes said.
The shooting happened near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, but university officials said no students were known to be among those injured or involved.
No one was in custody on Sunday in connection with the shooting. Police did not offer a motive.
