UAE Coach Bento Wary of Iran’s Threat in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UAE’s head coach Paulo Bento says they have two difficult matches against Iran and Qatar in the World Cup qualification.

The Portuguese wants his side to make full use of the increased number of FIFA World Cup qualification slots when it competes in the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26.

With Asia’s confirmed slots increased to eight compared to just four for the Qatar 2022 edition, Bento believes UAE can end its long wait for a second appearance at the global showpiece, having made its debut in the 1990 edition.

“It’ll be tough and difficult for us due to the quality of the opponents,” said the 55-year-old tactician.

“Logistically it’s not a bad one for us. This is important because sometimes our players are not used to traveling a lot and we don’t need any adaptations.

“The target is that (to reach the World Cup). We should think about what we can do to reach the goal and how we can do it,” he added.

“I haven’t seen the full schedule but the first two games will be very tough - against Qatar away and Iran at home.

“So, we need to be patient because the first two games are going to be difficult but we will give our best and be as competitive as we can.”
